eavesdropping

And now she's talking about how he wants to have a baby with her "before it's too late".

Perhaps he's planning to conceive a child and then somehow die at work so that his family are well provided for.

Wonder whether she realises that the whole office can hear every word she says.

bizarre conversation

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 1:18 PM
The loud woman at work - the one who occasionally announces her toilet habits - is currently loudly discussing how much money she'll get if her boyfriend dies on duty (I gather he's a policeman). She's stressing that he has to die while he's at work, so there's not much chance of her getting the money.

She can't be much over 20 years old.

Progress Report

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 1:01 AM
Well I have been quiet haven't I? This has mainly been due to work and a Wordpress side project. Since my last post I have written some test code for Android that communicates with the Coppermine JSON-RPC extension I have written. More importantly I am nearing completion on the alpha of a Coppermine client for the iPhone. So here are some screen shots of the progress so far.

I'm still soppy and insufferable and zomgdesperate to get back to London. Only 8 days 23 hours and a few minutes though, so I'll survive. The internets need informing that we have all teh cutes. ^_^

Work experience placement still goes well. I was feeling rather nervous when I went last week but that was mainly due to a random bout of hormonal moodyness (flipping between angry, teary, ok, teary, anxious...) which thankfully passed after a couple of days (think taking provera helped). Attending Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the moment, feeling fine about going in tomorrow.

This post was brought to you by besottedness and Bulgarian Merlot. Adios!

R.I.P. Charles N. Brown

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Charles N. Brown has passed away at 72.

This saddens me greatly. Charles was the founder and editor of Locus magazine, pretty much the only magazine in the world dedicated to fantasy and science fiction books and writers, as well as covering the conventions and fiction mags that have made up the industry. Locus started out as a fanzine and ended up becoming the authority on F&SF literature, and it always seemd to be Brown's enthusiasm that kept the magazine, and indeed a good chunk of SF fandom, alive. The magazine is to continue without him, as he wanted. He died in his sleep, on the way back from a SF book convention. R.I.P. to one of the biggest fans of the fantastic in fiction there's been.

Questions

 Hi Everybody,

I'm looking to swap out the pickups on my cheap strat knock off here. It's not a great guitar but since I've already used it to experiment with scalloping a neck I figure I can't hurt it by swapping pickups.

Essentially, what type of pickups do you like, and why? I'm not really set on any one particular type, brand or sound, I'm really just trawling for ideas and info.

Any ideas or concepts happily listened too, no matter how crazy or odd. In fact, the odder the better. :-)

I could do with some more of this. Just as English bands tend to seem like they’re full or artistically driven mental cases, and Italian bands are essentially dignified even when angsty, so the French bands seem so casually easy in their contemplation, which is all decidedly cool.

Guerre Froide were a Cold Wave band to be reckoned with back in the 80’s who didn’t stick around long, but reformed a few years back, and still have it, just as Metal Urbain do and Brotherhood Of Pagans. With ‘Nom’ it creeps up on you, a sense of dissonant wrangling offsetting the oblique mood and clear, simple melodic method. Rhythmically dogmatic but lightly handled there are also vocals that walk the walk, sounding jaded one minute, but heard beneath furrowed brows. The guitar tingles, but there is a quiet menace, like a baby farting.

Incidentally I don’t know if that’s the actual title of the EP, I have simply guess from the attractive but all-French folded card press release. I can however state with my usual authority that the second song is ‘Entre Nous’ and it’s another ticklish, jarring blighter, the vocals wafted through a shabby well ventilated tunnel of atmospheric, troubled sound. With ‘Planete Hurlante’ they up the ante with a moody pirouette, the bass seepage contrasting with some itchy synth and much gloominess to be had.

The easy nature of their work is of course a disguise. To be this effortless you just have to be bloody cold. And so they are.

clothes

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 3:04 PM
My Mum, who I told to absolutely not go looking for clothes for me to wear to the Breakfast at Tiffany's themed hen night, called me this morning to apologise for having done just that.

She's bought me a skirt that's two sizes too big - and found a belt to go with it, with the assumption that something that's way too big and with a belt will be adjustable to fit.
Perhaps it would, if she was still here with her needle and thread.
Perhaps it will anyway.
Maybe when it's here I'll be very very grateful.

Usually, though, when she buys me clothes without consulting me, she buys things that go straight back in the post to her to be returned.
